Slovakia Castles

Castles and towers start to be built after the tartar invasion since half of 13th century. Originally royal castles were later acquired by nobility. Except for defensive function, they had also economic and administrative function. With the growing development of the military technique castles started to loose their significance and became desolated. Since 16th century nobility started to build more comfortable settlements in their bottoms.
More than 100 medieval castles gradually changed to ruins. In those that were preserved or reconstructed are today museum expositions. Among the most beautiful castles of Slovakia belong Red Stone castle, Orava castle, Bojnice castle, Trencin castle and of course Spiss castle.
Cachticky castle – mighty fortress

Bratislava Castle – symbol and the dominant of the city

The first traces of settlement originate from the end of the late stone age, and there are relics here from the ages of the Roman to the Great Moravian empire. The most fundamental alterations were made during the reign of Marie Theresa (1740-1780)

Budatinsky castle – (1798 – 1945 belonged to the Csaki family)

The castle was built after the re-fortification of the country after the Tatar invasion in the middle of the 13th century. It was a water castle protected by the river Vah and Kysuca and moats.
